Behind the Lines: The Year's Best Cartoons brings together a selection of the best works entered in the National Museum of Australia's 2003 Political Cartooning Competition.

This competition, thanks to the generosity of Australia's cartoonists, has continued to grow. In this, the seventh year of the competition, we received 316 entries from 66 artists - the most entries ever received. I am happy to say that more than half of these works have been donated to the Museum and are helping to build a wonderful visual archive of Australian history.

One hundred and five entries have been selected for display and are reproduced on this website. As you flick through these cartoons you will be reminded of the major events and personalities of the year in politics. Taken together they are proof that Australia's great tradition of cartooning and illustration continues unabated.
